Award-winning singer-songwriter Jessi Alexander recently caught up with God’s Country hosts Dan and Reid Isbell about “the line no on saw coming” in one of Blake Shelton’s hit singles.
Alexander teamed up with Connie Harrington and Deric Ruttan to write “Mine Would Be You,” which Shelton released on his eighth studio album, Based on a True Story…, in 2013. That record also included “Boys ‘Round Here,” “Sure Be Cool If You Did,” “Doin’ What She Likes,” and more. God’s Country shared a clip of Alexander’s rendition of “Mine Would Be You” on Instagram on Sunday (November 16). The Isbell brothers hailed the single “one of our favorite songs to come out of this town,” and teased “the story how they landed on this last line for this [Blake Shelton] smash is a killer.”
“This week Reid and Dan host a fellow West Tennessean and GRAMMY nominated songwriter Jessi Alexander out in God's Country. Jessi is a force to be reckoned with in Nashville with penning some of the biggest songs in the genre and an ACM AND CMA Song of the Year with ‘I Drive Your Truck.’ She shares her inspirational Nashville journey that will leave anyone feeling inspired to chase a dream. The three of them joke on some of their Nashville ‘Mine Would Be’s’ and the episode ends with an old habit she can't let go.”
Dan and Reid — who have written music for Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Scotty McCreery, Jon Pardi, Lainey Wilson and others — started their weekly podcast in early January 2024. Some of the first guests to appear on the show include HARDY, Dustin Lynch, Colbie Caillat and others.
“One of our favorite things about country music has always been how intertwined it is with the outdoors,” Dan and Reid Isbell said in a statement when God’s Country launched. They hope to “bring the outdoor enthusiast or country music lover an up close and personal look into the minds of some of the best songwriters and artists of the genre — a place where they can be honest about struggles, relationships, their connection to the outdoors, the music business, family, whatever they feel comfortable talking about. We can’t wait to see where this partnership will lead and who this podcast will reach.”
The iHeartPodcasts/MeatEater show is available anywhere you listen to podcasts, including in the iHeartRadio app. Select country stations will broadcast the show between 7-11:30 p.m. local time on Sunday evenings. Find God's Country here.
