NC State Cancels Spring Break, Adjusts Semester Schedule

North Carolina State University has eliminated spring break as well as changed the start and end dates of the upcoming spring semester.

"Since we announced those plans, it became clear that a week for spring break was causing health and safety concerns for some in our community," Chancellor Randy Woodson said in a press release on Thursday. After discussions with students, faculty, and staff, the university has decided to adjust the original semester schedule and get rid of the weeklong spring break.

The semester will now begin a week later than previously scheduled, starting January 19 and ending April 30. By starting later, the university said in the press release, they will have "more time to implement a robust COVID-19 testing strategy" for students.

The most notable change is the elimination of the weeklong spring break. Instead, the university will spread out four wellness days throughout the semester, which can be used to catch up on deadlines, work, or to simply rest.

"As a university, we are committed to being flexible and responsive to the needs and concerns of our community," Woodson said. "The months ahead, just as the months past, will bring new challenges that require us to be nimble. When we need to pivot to protect our community, we will do so."

Updated information about the new spring semester calendar can be found on the school's website.
