Toronto Blue Jays Find A Home Stadium In Buffalo

The Toronto Blue Jays will play their home games in Buffalo, New York, after Canadian officials denied them permission to host games at the Rogers Centre. The team announced their games will be held at Sahlen Field, home of the team's Triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons.

"We are extremely grateful to have a home in Buffalo this season, thanks to the openness, creativity, and partnership of the Buffalo Bisons, Major League Baseball, and Blue Jays staff, who have worked tirelessly to prepare us for games at Sahlen Field," Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro said in a statement.

Toronto begins the 60-game regular season on Friday (July 24) night when they play the Tampa Bay Rays. Their first home game is scheduled for July 29, but the stadium will not be ready by then. According to Sportsnetthe stadium won't be ready until August 11, when the team is slated to start a five-game homestand.

They will play their games on the road until Sahlen Field is ready.

The Blue Jays had been struggling to find a stadium to play in after Canadian officials deemed the extra travel to and from the United States too much of a risk to spread COVID-19 to allow them to play there. The team was hoping to find a major league stadium and tried to get permission to play in Pittsburgh. After officials in Pennsylvania nixed that plan, they were offered to play in Camden Yards in Baltimore but would have had to wait until September.
