CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ The country's next transportation secretary is ready to say goodbye to his job as mayor of North Carolina's largest city.

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx plans to resign Monday at a special meeting of the City Council as he prepares to get sworn in and join President Barack Obama's Cabinet.

The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Foxx as transportation secretary last week, leading Foxx to call the meeting.

The city council will have to appoint a new mayor to fill out Foxx's two-year term expiring in December. The mayor's post also will be on this year's ballot. Mayor Pro-Tem Patrick Cannon is running for mayor this fall, while councilman James Mitchell is considering it.

Foxx has been mayor since 2009, leading the city when it hosted the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
